Your Biggest Single-Day Unexplained Spike in Visits?
Hi
I'm sure everyone here knows daily visits (traffic) to our sites go up and down with a level of randomness. We get some busy days and some quiet days. Some days we get lots of visits cause of some unusual promotion to the site (e.g. requesting flags on here).
Has anyone had one REALLY unusual statistical outlier in terms of visits? If you look at my site here, for March 18, 2011, I suddenly had 178 new visitors that day, when for the month I was averaging less than 80, and my previously advertised high count was 121. The surprising thing is that I made no unusual efforts to advertise my site that one day. Check it out:

My visits get spiked when my back is turned or I go to the toilet.

lol whats that ? 80 visitors in plus? maybe it was sunday or saturday i sometimes average 35,000 visits per day but do get 75,000 - 100,000 sometimes =/ its not a suprise that on sunday people eneter there computers mroe ...

Well, that's exactly the point. Sometimes its 75,000, sometimes its 100,000. Like I said, there's random variation. Just cause your site gets more visits, that doesn't mean my site doesn't undergo random variation. Did you see the data above?

Think about marks you get in school. Usually they are around a certain value. Or what about the number of times you blink in a day? Or how many steps it takes you to walk across the street? Usually they are around a certain range. What I'm saying is that 178 exceeded the random range for visits to my site and this is the observation I'm making in this thread.
