Re: Uniform Country Names

thanks! looks better now.

still one thing: shouldnt we make micronesia the federated states again? micronesia is a generally definition and is including beside the federated states of micronesia the marshall islands, guam, palau, nauru and so on..

just my opinion ;)

I would say Cote D'Ivoire should be Ivory Coast as outside of the country it is called that way

Not agreed. The official name is in French. And it is officially recognized by the UN and all standardizations. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_3166-2:CI

I agree with Pilandia - In the UK and US these days even the media tend to use Cote d'Ivoire

Thanks Jeremy!
But: The chart picture of the overview now shows "United States o..." - if the US flag is placed on the left side of the "ring". It doesn't look very nice. (In nearly all other cases the country names used now aren't as long as before - how about switching back to "United States"?)
BTW: You've changed "Cote d'Ivoire" to "Ivory Coast", too.

Nope, the official name is the United States of America and it looks much better when it's written like that. Who cares about the pie graph anyway?

Re: Uniform Country Names

Yeah - you are right.
And "Federal Republic of Germany" and "Republique Francaise" - to name just two examples - are official names, too...

Re: Uniform Country Names

Hello, I am new here, but these are my quick thoughts:

1. Palestinian Territory (occupied) became Gaza Strip for a day. This is a real conundrum. But leave the name Palestine because it is important.
2. United States Minor Outlying Islands became Baker Island for a day. Easier conundrum. Go back to the original. At least people can make sense of that.
3. Virgin Islands (US) became just Virgin Islands. Which must annoy the Brits who still have Virgin Islands (British).
Lorelei.

Re: Uniform Country Names

I agree that "United States o ..." looks bad on the chart.

We will be changing it back, since virtually everyone has it on their pie chart.

Re: Uniform Country Names

I found the list of the official short names in english of the countries of the world by the ISO organisation:

http://www.iso.org/iso/country_codes/iso_3166_code_lists/english_country_names_and_code_elements.htm

I didnt know that Vietnam should be written in two words: Viet Nam :O
