Re: Total Number???
Well, Paul also counts the Unknowns. That's why 252. 255 with unknowns, 3 dead. 252 with unknowns. There's 5 unknowns, so 247 countries + 5 unknowns.
251/251 countries and 3,860/3,860 flags collected.

Re: Total Number???
Not sure what an "unknown" is. If it's not known - ?
Just went to my "last resort" - Wikipedia - (never sure how accurate the info is there)
They list 243 - @wiki - search "List of Countries by Population"
oh, well - LOL - I never knew the world was such a fluid situation - I have learned so much since joining this forum. Even watching the Olympic opening with the athelets carrying the flags - "got that one, got that one, etc" cool.

Re: Total Number???
Unknowns. Those that are at the bottom of your stats... Unknown - Asia/Pacific, Unknown - Satellite Provider, Unknown - European Union, Unknown - Anonymous Proxy and Unknown.
Unknowns are basically visits that come from unknown location. Either because the particular IP wasn't assigned a country or because it's a dynamic IP that changes all the time.
My counter has ALL the flags that were/are available. You get the total number by just scratching Bouvet, Heard and Antilles from the list.

Re: Total Number???
The "unknown" is a high anonymous or distorting proxy. Probably used by a person living in a country that does not have a completely free internet. It allows them to visit sites like your own. And hides where they are from.

Re: Total Number???
I still don't understand why some countries won't show up in the Missing Countries section anyway
It's not the matter of VPN-only because Western Sahara does show up there and maybe others I dont remember.

Negative.
Unknown EU and unknown Asia/Pacific are usually IPs location of which is purposedly hidden.
Unknown Satellite and Proxy are self-explanatory.

Re: Total Number???
This is the mystique of Flag Counter. There are countries available, but don't show up on the official list. @holland. You can get an unknown from a distorting or a Tor proxy.

Re: Total Number???
@holland25. At least we agreed to differ. I know how to find weird proxy sites that distort everything. Kind regards.

Re: Total Number???
LOL - Confusing and fluid - and that's the difference between the number of flags and the number of countries. Wait - that's even more confusing and fluid - LOL.
I've managed to find over twenty lists of "Total Number of Countries" and no two of them have the same number. As the saying goes - "Why can't we all just get along?"
Between who recognizes who, who's part of who, what's a border and what isn't - and a gazillion other factors - I never realized how screwed up this world really is. No one can even agree what a country is, let alone how many there are.
