Karbala, Iraq

Me and Rod just got a hit from there. It registered on Rod's counter, but it registered as Unknown, Iraq on mine. It seems to me that only s09 registers that region. Is it the same case as it once was with New Valley and Kyiv?

Re: Karbala, Iraq

s05 and s09 are identical, both are even in the same facility.  Iraq hits are tricky, it seems many (most?) of them are satellite connections, and satellite sometimes does some interesting/strange things where you see different IPs loading different content on the same page.  It is likely that this is what happened, with one IP being unknown and the other Kerbala.

Re: Karbala, Iraq

I would understand if it were the same case as Paul and Fran (s09 being in Dallas and s03 in Chicago), but if s05 is in the same facility as s09, shouldn't they both register the hit? This is probably the weirdest thing that's ever happened since I started collecting flags

Re: Karbala, Iraq

Well they both do register the hit, something on the other end made the request from two different IP addresses.  Several years ago, I had satellite internet myself for a time, so I am familiar with the oddities.  Most pages were compressed/accelerated and came from a proxy server so as to minimize the amount of data that had to be beamed up and back down from outer space.  For instance, when you visited a secure site, you would often have a different IP address than when you were browsing an unsecure site, since secure sites couldn't be served in this manner.

Well, but our counters were both on the same site... Well, I guess I will have to live without Karbala
