Why they were here?
I believe no one could get these flags:
1/ Antarctica: population is 0.
2/ Bouvet Island: no one live here.
3/ French Southern and Antarctic Lands: Far far away land and very cold.
4/ Heard Island and McDonald Islands: Is there anyone live here?
5/ Pitcairn Islands: There is one Government-sponsored satellite internet connection, networked to all houses on the island. Only 67 islanders.
6/ Saint Helena: Saint Helena has a 4/2 Mbit/s internet link via Cable and Wireless International UK. That means you will never get its flag but instead by UK flag.
7/ South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands: About 20 people are living in this very cold place.
But I've got some rare visitors from unexpected lands; since July 30, 2009 ( the first day I added Flag counter into my blog):
Faroe Islands - 1
Palestinian Territory, Occupied - 1
Saint Pierre and Miquelon - 1
Cuba - 1
Iraq - 2

Re: Why they were here?
I don't think it has much to do with how remote/cold those areas are, but more with the existence of an internet company in those places
So for 1, 2, 3, 4 & 7: what are scientists then - penguins?
5 & 6 are partly correct

Re: Why they were here?
So, uh, why did you bump a 10 years old topic?
251/251 countries and 3,860/3,860 flags collected.
