It does seem rather strange - I am happy for people to see my flag counter - it may inspire them to get one of their own.

It is a legitimate request. If you operate a secure site your browser will likely display a warning if you load any content which isn't also secured. However, this is only the third time I've seen this request in the last few years. To implement SSL we would need to purchase a certificate for each server (at least $10 - $75 each per year) plus it puts additional load on the server to have to encrypt the image before it is sent. If it were ever done, it would be a Pro only option, but like I said before the demand just hasn't been there yet.
