Is a chat box like an instant messenger? I can't say that I've ever seen one on a website before.

yes it is..............but like a group chat...everyone can chat together................. and i have on lots of sites and forums

Ok, I've seen a couple of them now.
A chat box seems like a nice idea but depending on where it’s located it could be distracting for someone not participating.

not participating in what exactly????????
some users are logged in most of the day...it wasn't suggested for people who drop by once a week......it was suggested for users who are here often.......would it bother you if you logged in once a week and saw a chat box?

I am install Chat box from (free) for few webs to my clients, but IMHO it is child toy- you have a lot of forum/social nets for chat -ever have a same in your web? brrrrrrrrrrr......
