I was wondering about this, too.

When I first got my flagcounter, the names of some countries were displayed in their longer form, e.g., Russian Federation. Later on those names were shortened, e.g., Russia. And sometime this week, longer versions of country names made their reappearance on my and some other people's flagcounters.
