Proxy Servers?

I recently received 9 new flags in a very short period of time from particularly hard countries (see http://flagcounter.boardhost.com/viewtopic.php?id=3808).

Apparently the person who gave me the flags used a Proxy Server. I'm not entirely clear on how that works but it seems kinda like cheating.

All I really want to know if in fact my website actually popped up on somebody's computer and they saw it or if this was some type of hack where my website was not actually in that country. It kinda would be depressing if that was the case...

Re: Proxy Servers?

You requested the flags, LittleRock gave them from you.
He's in Russia and he used proxy servers of those foreign countries.
There are no forum members from those countries anyway.

Re: Proxy Servers?

A proxy server basically loads a site through a different computer.

If I were to load your site using a proxy in the United Kingdom, a computer in the UK is loading your site and passing it on to me.  Did it ever appear on someone's screen in the UK?  No.  But a computer there actually made the request.

Personally, I think it defeats the purpose of having a Flag Counter, as does placing your counter on a site you do not operate.  If you just want an image full of flags, Photoshop works great.  I would only be proud of a true representation of people that have visited my site.

That's exactly the way I feel. It sounds dumb but I don't get the excited feeling of getting a new flag knowing that it wasn't a genuine visit from a person in a different country. Maybe for some people it doesn't really matter or not, but from now on i'll probably ask if I put a request for flags that the person not use proxies. Sure it would be great to have the 200 or whatever flags shown on my counter but knowing they aren't real visits just defeats the purpose.

Thanks for the reply!

Re: Proxy Servers?

C'mon, if you wanted "real visits" you would just wait for "real" people to come by your site knowing they were interested in the content of what you're offering, not place requests on the forum for people to visit your website for the sake of getting another flag - doesn't really matter if it comes from a proxy or not, does it.

Re: Proxy Servers?

Generally spoken that's absolutely right - at least IMHO.
And: Asking ONE specific user for more and more flags means that you have to know that he is using proxies. Or do you really think he is travelling around the world to give you more and more flags. Another thing is asking users of this forum to visit your page to get the flag of the country they are living in. IMHO that's ok.
