How to avoid to be spoiled by spam mails?

Hi Jeremy,
It seems the flag counter forum is more and more an stage for people advertising watches, drugs, porns or other items nobody really expected here.
Do you have an option to ban those topics before they appear in the forum?
I know the option of report those topics but than can become a boring and time consuming job.

Thanks
Jens

I think this is a good idea. Some forums have filters for spam; like forbidding a certain site to be written in the forum. As some of the advertisement might be malicious, this is a really great idea Jens!

Re: How to avoid to be spoiled by spam mails?

I have just posted a message to Jeremy suggesting that a separate forum be opened so we can report SPAM Can you imagine the time it would take for Jeremy to moderate all the posts?

Re: How to avoid to be spoiled by spam mails?

Sure, I can. It is to consider whether an automated tool can do the work for him. I haven't expected that he will check individually each post.
How should a separate forum work? Shall we post there SPAMs of this forum? I think that makes the work rather complicated than easier.
A different approach is  to extend the Report|Quote menu by a SPAM button. The SPAM marked entry can be than displayed as "probably SPAM" in the index until a second user has confirmed that. It can disappear after being confirmed by a second user.

That is only a simple idea to let the responsibility to the most of the forum content to the forum itself; activate the self-regulating forces.

Another option may be that the first 5 messages of a new user have to be moderated. I think that will reduce the spam a lot, since most spammers will not wait for 5 messages to be aproved and then start spamming...

Jens, I think that is a great idea. Perhaps adding a button "Spam" besides "Report" will save users a lot of time in reporting. Like in YouTube, spam messages can just be directly reported by clicking on the 'spam' button. I love this idea, very brilliant Jens.

Re: How to avoid to be spoiled by spam mails?

Grishend, thanks for the compliments.  I only offered an idea.
Promote some users to moderators is a different option.
Last but not least it will be Jeremy*'s decision how to handle that problem.
I only see the risk that people will leave the forum if it is flooded by spam.
Though, we are looking forward how FC (I assume Jeremy is the spokesman of them) will handle that problem.
