Re: Names of German regions (states)

@ Jeremy: As you are taking all feedback into consideration - please allow me some more words: I guess it would be a sign of respect towards the nations/countries - with hundreds/thousands years of heritage as Rod wrote - where different roots of the U.S. are to install the formerly used names of regions/states/provinces again!
As far as I know you lost some Pro users for other reasons. Well, I guess you will lose me if these names will stay in English.
BTW: What's the English translation of the name of the president of the U.S.?

Re: Names of German regions (states)

Let's summarise.
We do have the interests of few users who like to see all regions in English (where an English translation is available) and few users who like to see the regions in native language (in Latin letters). We haven 't received requests of users who like to see regions in native language with the letters used in their country/language) so far.

Let's pick up Lorelei's suggestion of a compromise at #15.

How about the idea to provide both local and English versions (in Latin letters)  and let the user decide which he would like to be displayed.
Problems might occur if countries have two or more official languages. How to handle this? Provide more versions.

We can ask Jeremy about the possibilities to implement such a feature if we come to a consensus.

Re: Names of German regions (states)

@ Jens: I agree - as long as I will get the formerly used names back (without having to switch to them from the English names every time when I'm opening my counter!!!) - which means that the suggested "language option" has to be installed within the settings section of the counters...

Re: Names of German regions (states)

@meme,
Thanks for picking it up. You added a good point which should be taken into consideration.

We will see what the others will say and forward a commonly agreed suggestion to Jeremy.

Re: Names of German regions (states)

Well, I hope that the few users participating in this thread so far (not counting the "fakes") will agree as well - as they stated that they are in favour of getting back the formerly used names...

Re: Names of German regions (states)

This is an English speaking site. And they comprise the majority of users. There is also a large minority of non-native English speakers. However, the vast majority of those people probably use English as their second language and so use it to understand this site. This site merely reflects the real world. And as was mentioned earlier, where do you draw the line ? Does FC use Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Cyrillic, Greek, Urdu, Bengali, Punjabi, Hindi and even Irish script for respective regions ? If u r prepared to accept names in the Latin alphabet for regions where Latin does not exist, then it does not make sense to object to English names where it is clearly understood. BUT there are many regional native names, especially in Europe, that are understood, even by English speakers !

Re: Names of German regions (states)

the regions should be left the way they are originaly are, the whole is not only english, i say some people may be offended from changing their native region in english, i know this is an english speaking forums but at least some respect from people from other regions, just too keep the name originally in the native language ... just saying...
