Because some countries are actual physical descriptions (like the the Cote d'Ivoire example you provided.  It literally means coast of ivory in French).  So, countries that talk a different language have a name for the country that is also a literal translation of that country's name into their language.  That is why Cote D'Ivoire is Ivory Coast in English-speaking countries.

I don't know about Germany, Deutschland and Alemania though.  Even more interesting, in Arabic countries, Egypt is Misr.  The official name of the country is Arab Republic of Egypt!

I am from Germany
and Germany = Deutschland = Alemania. It means the same...

we say to
Côte D'Ivore - Elfenbeinküste
Belarus - Weissrussland
all other, I think relative similar to english

Greece: Al Yunan
Germany: Almanya
Morocco: Al Maghreb
United Kingdom: Al Mamlaka Al Mottahida

Croatia is called Kroatien in Swedish.
