Macedonia / FYROM dispute

Anyone know anything about this?

We consistently get messages from users in Greece vowing to never use our service again because we call this country Macedonia.

As most here know, our country facts, including the country names we use, come from the CIA's World Factbook.  The U.S. refers to Macedonia as... Macedonia.  As a U.S. based business, we plan to follow their lead.  I'm sure there's some strong feelings on both side of this issue.

Let's hear what our users think

Greece dont recognised Macedonia because a territory from Greece is called Macedonia too or it calls similar, Greece want a name change from Macedonia As far as I know.

Re: Macedonia / FYROM dispute

It's a country if they like it or not. Just because there is a region in Greece called Macedonia doesn't mean they have to throw a big fit about it. It's quite pointless if you ask me, to me thats like someone saying they don't recognize recognize London Ontario (where I live) because there happens to be a London England.

Re: Macedonia / FYROM dispute

Greece would recognise it if Macedonia would change the name, not more and not less. But you are right it is a pointles reason.

Heh - I don't see why some Greek users try to boycott the counter.  They should not use it, if they feel like it.  Macedonia is indeed a sovereign country, therefore we should recognize it as the rest of the world.

I live in State of Georgia, USA - and we do recognize the Country of Georgia in Central Asia, albeit the exact same name.

I am sure Greece and Macedonia will strike an agreement soon, and Greece will recognise it someday.

Re: Macedonia / FYROM dispute

Just as an example, the dispute was also made clear in the past month's Eurobasket 2009 Poland, where all the world saw the scoreboards as GRE - MKD, while the Greek TV stations shaped it as GRE - MKD (MKD is crossed out in this one) or GRE - *Just a white line here*.

This issue also makes the EU negotiations of Macedonia. EU officially recognizes Macedonia under the name FYROM. However, as Olli Rehn (European Commissioner for Enlargement) has stated in July, the dispute has to be solved soon. (Possibly in the upcoming years.) They are trying to convince Greece to use the name Macedonia. FYROM is not acceptable, so say the Macedon.

So all we can do is to keep watching=)

Re: Macedonia / FYROM dispute

Greece will have to accept Macedonia's name sooner or later.
We have two Guyanas, two Koreas, two Chinas, two Congos, three Guineas, why would this be so different now?

Re: Macedonia / FYROM dispute

I had no idea about any of this, but I found an old news article that explained a bit of the background on the conflict if you're interested.
